Elementary (K-5)
The emphasis of the Lower Grade curriculum is educating the whole child. While offering an excellent academic program, we also emphasize the music, physical education, and technology education. Sacred Heart Parish School provides all children opportunities to shine in a safe and nurturing environment.
We offer a balanced reading program that engages students in differentiated literacy experiences through phonics and authentic texts. In Kindergarten through Grade 2, we use The SuperKids Reading Program. Transitional Kindergartners use Happily Ever After, which is the precursor to the SuperKids Reading Program. Students in K – Grade 3 use CAFÉ Daily 5. Daily 5 focuses on Read to Self, work on writing, read to someone, listen to reading, and word work. In Grades 4 and 5, students use CAFÉ Daily 3, which is a modification of the Daily 5: read to self, word work, and work on writing.
Our students develop a love for writing as they are guided through each step of the process: rehearsing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. In grades 1 through 5, we use the Step Up to Writing curriculum, which emphasizes the process and types of writing.
We focus on understanding mathematical processes and problem solving rather than arriving at answers using prescribed, memorized methods. Using the Go Math curriculum, our teachers provide a hands-on, collaborative approach to math. Students are empowered to help one another and share their understanding.
