Kindergarten

Religion

All students begin and end the day in prayer at Sacred Heart Parish School. They also stop to pray several times during the school day. Kindergarten students learn about God’s creation and love in the Stories of God’s love Religion program. Students also learn about their Catholic identity by participating in para-liturgies, Mass, Rosary, special Saints days, prayers, and other devotions. The classroom has a prayer corner available at all times.

Language Arts

In Kindergarten, students use a balanced literacy program that includes reading, writing, speaking, performing, observing, illustrating, and creating. Students are taught using phonics instruction, Literature, shared reading, guided reading, independent and partner reading. The SuperKids Reading Program is the core phonics program used daily to teach the basic phonics skills needed for foundational reading. During Daily 5 time, the teacher meets with students in groups or one-on-one to address the diverse needs of students in reading instruction. The CAFÉ reading strategies, also practiced during Daily 5, are strategies that develop reading comprehension, accuracy, fluency and expand vocabulary. Kindergarten student practice writing daily through the use of literature and direct instruction, using the Step Up to Writing. Reading and writing span the core subjects, including science and social studies.

Mathematics

Kindergarteners use the Go Math program, which is designed to help children develop in their ability to represent, count, write, and compare numbers to 20 and beyond. Kindergarten students also practice classifying and sorting data, recognizing geometric shapes, measurement, and simple addition and subtraction. While teaching the math standards, a combination of Go Math lessons, hands-on exploration, and the IXL math app are used to meet diverse needs of all students.

Science and Social Studies

Kindergarten students learn about science and social studies daily through thematic units. The units include literature, hands-on exploration and activities, art, and reading and writing.

Physical Education

In Early Childhood, Physical Education instruction is focused on fundamental movement skills, perceptual motor skills and movement concepts, and active physical play. Student activities include balls, beanbags, hoops, rhythm and dance, Brain Gym, and balance. Students participate in P.E. once a week for 30 minutes.

Music

Kindergarten students explore rhythm, pitch discrimination, and learn to match pitch vocally. Students are introduced to Kodaly music symbols and practice songs for use in their para-liturgies.

Technology

Our technology is integrated at the classroom level and part of the curriculum. Kindergarten students use iPads in the classroom, which they share with Transitional Kindergarten.
